An incomplete body fragment from a cast copper alloy cooking vessel, of Late Medieval to Post Medieval dating (15th to 17th Centuries AD).
The body fragment is sub trapezoidal in plan and triangular in cross section. A horizontal ridge is present on the exterior of the vessel, whereas the internal surface is smooth.
It measures 36.35mm in length, 22.84mm wide and 7.99 mm thick. It weighs 21.3 grams.
It is a mid green to mid brown colour, with a slightly abraded surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement in the ploughsoil, has resulted in a loss of some of the surface patina from the edges of the vessel fragment. These areas should be carefully monitored for signs of active corrosion occurring (bright greeny powdery residue). To minimise this risk, the vessel fragment should be stored in a dry acid-free environment (such as a sealed stewart box or similar tupperware, with silica gel and acid free tissue paper).
The body fragment probably came from a large cauldron or posnet type vessel.
