A cast copper alloy object, either a buckle or strap end, dating from the medieval period. The object consists of a rectangular plate, tapered towards the top, with the remains of a loop at the terminal. Two iron rivets are visible at the bottom right and left of the image. The object is in fair condition with a surface patina of dark brown-green. Most of the loop and part of the plate have broken away and been lost.
Egan (p.151-2) describes medieval one-piece strap ends similar in form to this example dating from the late 14th-15th centuries. Several examples of this type may be found on this database, for example ESS-EOCF55. Alternatively, both Egan (p.78-9) and Whitehead (p.34-5) illustrate cast oval framed buckles with integral plates which Whitehead dates to c.1250-1400. On the photograph a circular depression is visible just below the base of the loop-this may be a rivet hole or perhaps a hole for containing the buckle pin.
