An incomplete fragment of a handmade curved ceramic roof tile type, known as Imbrex, of Roman dating (1st to 4th Centuries AD).
The tile fragment is sub triangular in plan, with a shallow curved cross section. The ceramic fabric is oxidised (orangey red colour), with frequent large grog & metamorphic rock inclusions.
The tile fragment measures 43.26mm in length, 33.60mm wide and 13.29mm thick. It weighs 17.3 grams.
The style of the fabric and the curved cross section is suggestive of a curved ceramic roof tile type, known as Imbrex, used commonly throughout the Roman period (1st to 4th Centuries AD). Imbrex tiles were used in conjunction with a large flat tile with square flat ridges at either side, known as tegula.
Tile fragment was not photographed.
