SOCKETED AXEHEAD

Unique ID: LVPL-09B703

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

An incomplete cast bronze (copper alloy) faceted socketed axe (axehead) dating to the Late Bronze Age.

The body of the axehead is rectangular in plan and faceted, flaring gradually towards the blade. The mouth of the axe is rectangular in cross section measuring 27.16mm x 28.39mm. The shape of the mouth is sub-rectangular (rectangular with rounded corners). There is a moulded lip around the opening. Part of the mouth is missing on one side, which occurred in prehistory, and the edges are bent slightly inwards. The damage continues down one face of the axe until just above the half way point. The side loop is missing however the scars remain. The lower section of the axe flares gradually to form an elegantly expanding blade. The cutting edge is worn and corroded and the blade tips damaged. On each side of the body is a casting flash. On each face is a shallow 'stop ridge' where the body begins to flare. The axehead measures 108.3mm in length, and weighs 122.9g. It is 37.82mm wide across the blade and the damaged cutting edge measures 2.55mm in thickness. The object has a smooth dark brown patina which has broken away in places.
