METAL WORKING DEBRIS

Unique ID: SF-7B2E67

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A fragment of cast copper-alloy metal working debris. It is rectangular in form, D-shaped in section and terminates at both ends in old breaks. The surfaces demonstrate signs of post-depositional wear and corrosion, and are crudely/unevenly finished. It measures 24.94mm in length, 8.79mm in width, 5.04mm in thickness and 5.72g in weight. Although this fragment has a relatively uniform shape it does not appear to have been finished as a complete object. It is possible that it is a fragment from a larger object that has been subject to damage and/or re-use, but it seems most likely that this is a fragment of metal working debris. As such, it may be of any date from the Bronze Age onwards, although the findspot might indicate a possible Roman to Early-Medieval date range.
