A copper-alloy small-long brooch of Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) date.
The brooch has a square head-plate, the upper surface of which is decorated with a border of punched ring marks. The short, arched bow springs from the centre of the head plate's bottom side; it is of triangular section, with squared corner mouldings at both ends. At the base this moulding continues downwards, forming a right angle. The foot comprises a truncated lozenge-shaped plate with a border of punched rings, as on the head-plate. A right-angled, perforated lug, situated centrally, at the base of the head's underside, represents the attachment for the now-missing pin. The catchplate is located behind the top of the foot and consists of a smaller right-angled lug, its rolled upper edge missing. The artefact measures 62.6mm long, up to 18.5mm wide (head-plate) and weighs 14.74g.
Similar small-long brooches are illustrated in the Ashmolean Museum's A summary of the Anglo-Saxon Collections (MacGregor and Bolick 1993: 126-127), the closest parallels being nos. 15.7 (from Brighthampton, Oxon.), 15.8 (Haslingfield, Cambs.) and 15.9 (Fairford, Glos.). According the authors, such brooches first appear in the early fifth century, continuing well into the sixth (ibid. 125).
