MOUNT

Unique ID: KENT-22AAF3

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A complete, Roman, cast, copper alloy, phallic mount. Phalluses were a popular representation and unlike the situation today were openly displayed on public buildings. They were sometimes worn by the military as amulets or good luck charms to ward off the evil eye. They could represent fertility, masculinity and strength. This example has two small, now broken, integral attachment pins one at each end on the back which is otherwise recessed. There appears to be little wear and an attractive even brown patina which may be due to the water logged ground conditions in which it was found. This mount is likely to date to 43-199AD. Ref. Celtic & Roman Artefacts, Nigel Mills, Greenlight Publishing 2000, page 131 no. RB415, Benet's Second Edition, Artefacts of England and the United Kingdom, compiled by P.G. Murawski, Paul Murawski 2003, page 151-154 and Roman Buckles and Military Fittings, Andrew Appels & Stuart Laycock, Greenlight Publishing 2007, page 95-96. This mount is 29.58mm long, 16.21mm wide, 5.1mm thick and weighs 3.9g.
