A very large lead alloy weight or possible anchor of unknown date. It is a flat, seven sided slab of lead alloy with an irregular circular hole though it. There are deep scratches on one face. It is 168mm by 160mm in plan, 50mm thick and weighs 6.5kg.
This find is clearly a weight designed to hang from an attachment through the hole. The finder interprets it as an anchor because the area where it was found was a 500 acre lake before it was drained in the 17th century. It is similar is size and shape to other archaeological anchor stones such as IOW-BF2C26, one found in London (http://www.portcities.org.uk/london/server/show/ConNarrative.37/chapterId/456/The-early-port.html) and some found in Israel (http://www.jewishmag.com/98mag/yavnehyam/yavnehyam.htm). However, it could also be a weight for use on land. Possibilities include counterweights for farm machinery and counterweights to close gates.
