A late medieval or early post-medieval gilded silver pendant, with a suspension loop at the top, a cabled border and a claw setting, which contains a black stone. The black stone resembles jet and is very distressed, but appears to have been carved into the shape of a scallop shell. There may be a central figure of St James but the damage is too extensive to be certain of this.
Jet souvenirs were avidly collected by pilgrims to the shrine of Santiago de Compostela from the late Middle Ages. The scallop shell is the symbol of St James, who is venerated there.
The pendant dates from the fifteenth or early sixteenth century.
James Robinson
