Object type certainty: Certain

Incomplete post medieval cast copper alloy buckle frame. The frame was double looped but one of the oval loops has been lost to an old break. It is D shaped in section with a flat back and a decorative outer edge. The decoration consists of an asymmetrical moulded pattern of four folded leaves running around the outer edge, the lobed of one overlapping the base of the other. The strap bar has a slight curve due to damage and a lobed knop at each end. The frame measures 21mm long, 23.4mm wide, 2.8mm thick and weighs 3.08 grams.

The frame appears to be part of a large group of double oval looped buckles with decorative outer edges and lobed knops at the ends of the strap bars dating to c.1500-1650. It is unusual as unlike most examples of this type it lacks symmetry around the central point of each loop. No. 384 in Whitehead (2003: 63) is a similar buckle although with lobed knops rather than the overlapping leaves, which he dates to c.1550-c.1650 AD.
