An incomplete Post-Medieval cast lead powder flask cap, AD1600 - AD1700. The cap secured the mouth of a flask that held a single charge of gun powder. Sometimes up to twelve such flasks were carried on a bandolier, and were referred to as 'Apostles'. One of the integral loops that attached the cap to the bandolier is missing. The cap has been restored from a damaged condition to enable a more informative image to be presented. It measures 18.9mm in diameter, has an internal depth of 14.1mm, and weighs 12.4g. The surviving integral lug is a semi-circular lug with flattened sub-rectangular to sub-oval cross-section. The maximum external width of the lug loop is 7.2mm and internal width of the lug loop is 1.9mm.
This lug now lays bent up against the external surface of the artefact rather than projecting out away from the object as depicted in the attached image.
PAS record IOW-163A0B also records a powder-flask cap and lists a number of other examples also listed on the database. Those examples all show (or show the remains of) an integral funnel part which is not present on the artefact recorded here in this record. Close inspection of this cap shows no evidence of any trace that there was ever any additional part to this object.
