An incomplete cast copper-alloy Anglo-Saxon strap end of Thomas Class A Type 1. It is sub-oval in shape with convex sides tapering to a decorative, zoomorphic terminal. The terminal has a slightly projecting globular snout with two deeply incised oval shaped eyes, above which are two rounded ears with crescentic decoration. The sides of the plate have undecorated longitudinal borders within which is contained a central decorative panel. This carries chip carved zoomorphic decoration with Trewhiddle style decorative motifs consisting of a seated quadruped, head facing towards the attachment end with open mouth and extended tongue, small pelleted eye and tail curving forwards along its back. The field surrounding it has additional chip carved elements of uncertain form, as well as traces of an added white metal within the recessed areas of the panel. At the attachment end the central panel terminates in a curving transverse ridge that separates the central panel from the decorative elements of the attachment end proper. The split attachment end itself has two circular rivet holes, both now incomplete due to old breaks, and a raised border containing a chip carved recessed field that is pelta shaped with a raised circular motif at its centre. The back face of the strap end is worn and undecorated, the entire object having a dark green patina that demonstrates signs of corrosion and post-depositional damage. It measures 38mm in length, 11.04mm in width, 1.54mm in thickness and 2.84g in weight.

This strap end falls into Thomas' Class A Saxon strap ends and is further defined as a Type 1 strap end due to the presence of the split attachment end, the shape of the plate, the zoomorphic terminal and the central decorative panel (see Thomas, 2003: pp. 2, fig. 1.1). This indicates a date in the 9th century AD for the current example.
