The hook section of a cast, copper alloy, dress fastener dating from 1600-1700. It has an oval shaped body, concave on the underside. At one end of the body is a circular fastening loop, now broken. There are two further fastening loops at the other end of the body, one on each side. Beyond this pair of loops is a short, rectangular section that would have curved back on itself to form a broad, blunt hook, but this has broken away and is also missing. The upper surface of the body carries a design of a flower with two leaves and three petals. There are three small crescents below the flower. The underside of the fastener is plain. It has a dark green patina and is 34.6mm long, 15.8mm wide and 3.9mm thick. It weighs 5.87gm.
Similar fasteners are illustrated in Bailey, 2004, Buttons and Fasteners 500BC - AD1840, page 100. Also Read page 171 plate 640 Class A type 2 is similar.
