Oval buckle frame, with pierced lugs behind the bar in which a (missing) spindle for the attachment of the pin and plate would have been fixed, and with an animal-head knop in the centre of the outside edge. A wide moulded groove in the top of the bar and a narrower one in the animal head would have accommodated the pin. A shallow channel along the top of the sides and outside edge is inlaid with silver, some of which is extant.
A complete buckle of this type, with frame, pin and plate, excavated in Norwich (HER 373), is discussed by H. Geake (in Emery, P. EAA 120, 2007, 199, fig. 5.90 SF 102. Similar frames have been found at Fishergate, York (Rogers 1993, 1348, fig. 650 no. 5314), Burgh Castle (HER 13227), Sandringham (HER 3257) and Whissonsett (HER 31879).
