JETTON

Unique ID: LON-FFD9B4

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A post medieval copper-alloy Nuremburg jetton struck by Hans Schultes II, dating to 1584 AD. Venus/shield penny design (cf. Mitchiner 1988, 396 ref. 1318ff. & 406). It has been offstruck on the obverse, and measures 29.9mm (diameter) x 1.0mm (thickness) and weighs 4.11g.

Notes:

This jetton is dated to 1584AD and has the rosette personal marks/stops of Hans Schultes II; however he did not become a master until 1586AD (Mitchiner 1988, 406). It could therefore be a very late issue of his father, Hans Schultes I, who died in 1584AD (Mitchiner 1988, 396).

The shield on the obverse is similar but not identical to the personal shield of the Schultes family.
