Fine Medieval cast open frame brooch, probably dating to the 13th – 14th century. The brooch frame is composed of an eight-pointed star, each sub-triangular component of which has two perforations. Between each segment is a raised circular collet containing a now white chalky substance. The settings have been analysed using a scanning electron microscope, indicating they are composed of calcium carbonate (M. Davies, pers. comm.). The settings originally would have been domed and the analysis implies that the collets were probably inset with mother of pearl or similar. The pin is of D-shaped cross section and utilises one of the interior ring of holes, which has been widened to accommodate the pin. There is no obvious pin constriction on the opposite side of the frame. The pin has broken along the shaft near the loop. File marks are visible on the face of the brooch. A number of the points on the frame are damaged. The rear of the brooch is flat.
