A complete Medieval cast copper-alloy pedestal/pendant seal matrix (c. 1200-c. 1500 AD).

The handle is hexagonal in cross-section and tapers upwards to sub-circular suspension loop. There is a collar dividing the handle from the loop. The oval die measures 25.27 x 20.39mm and depicts a forward facing figure of St Andrew in a loose fitting garment drawn in at the waist. The wrists and ankles are tied to a cross saltire supported by an arched platform. Below the platform there may have been a praying figure. However, this area is corroded and illegible. At each side of the waist there is an open crown and the field contains cross-hatching. From an impression, the surrounding inscription starts from bottom left and possibly reads:

_SILL P P SIO_ _ _GI _ WILLS hENRICIA _NOPS (NOPS over head)

This seal matrix has a dark green patina with small areas of corrosion.

Height: 22.74mm. Weight: 12.35g.

Similar seal matrices depicting St Andrew on a saltire cross have been recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database: IHS-D6B0D6 and YORYM-4498A5.
