A complete copper alloy Roman plate brooch in the form of a stylised bird. Unusual in form, the brooch has a central rectangular plate with central panel decorated with two complete lozenges with triangles at each side decorated with ring-and-dot decoration. Triangles border the central panel both above and below, and all were inlaid with enamel, however this has now degraded from the cells. A projection from the rear of the brooch forms a roughly triangular 'tail', again with cells of degraded enamel. The spring pin has two turns and is complete, as is the extended catchplate. No direct comparison could be found in the usual literature, although Roman plate brooches of various form are generally dated to the 2nd or 3rd century AD, and it is likely that this example also date from this period.
This has been noted as an interesting find by the recorder.
