Part of a cast copper alloy late Iron Age to Early Roman bridle bit; the side link from a three-link bridle-bit dating from 400 BC - 100 AD. The object is chunky and solid copper alloy. At one end is the remains of a broken loop, now a wide U shape. The rein ring would probably have attached to this loop. The breaks are very worn and well patinated. At the base of the broken loop is a thick double collar round the shaft which is square in section. The collar is not well moulded, and appears to be triple on one face. Below the collar is a circular sectioned bulbous shaft with convex sides. The far end of this is also broken, again, the break is worn and patinated. The link would probably have extended into another loop at ninety degrees to the first one (the side link head) to which the centre link would have attached. The whole bridle bit would have comprised of two side links, two rein rings and a centre link.
The metal has a dark brown patina and is pitted in places. It is 54.6mm long, 25.5mm wide at the loop, 16.4mm thick and weighs 59.95g. Compare WILT-FA9783, SUSS-413F38 and LVPL-B8AE82.
