A fragment of Early Early-Medieval (500-600) small square-headed brooch, consisting of the footplate (with worn catchplate to the reverse) and part of the bow. It measures 26.27x21.50x10.18mm and weighs 4.8g. All breaks are ancient.

The bow is D-shaped in cross-section, being flat to the reverse, with a rib running along the centre of the curved face. The terminal, which is flat and now very worn, would have originally been trefoil. All arms are now worn stubs. At the centre of the terminal is decoration in the form of a central pellet around which are thin, worn ribs in the form of two lozenges (one inside the other). Outside these is a thicker rib forming a cross extending from the bow and into the three arms. It is made up from four curving lines joined by short horizontal or vertical lines at the arms and bow.

Helen Geake, Finds Adviser, comments: 'Small square-headed broches are more often found in Kent or the Isle of Wight.
