A silver seal matrix of Medieval date. It is a pointed oval shape with a suspension loop at one end. The loop projects from the top of the matrix and is zoomorphic, with a stylised animal head facing away from the matrix face on the front of the loop. The central design is of an ornate and stylised fleur-de-lis. The legend is set between grooved borders, and reads + SIGILL: WILLELMI: WART (Seal of William Wart). It is in very good condition. The reverse of the seal matrix is flat and plain. Compare PAS-2A3EE5 (2006 T434) which is a seal matrix of similar design.
The surname was probably Warton or Warter, both of which are probably from place-names.
Notes:
Consequently, in terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
