Lower part of a copper alloy thimble, probably of Post Medieval date with angled sides a straight base and break across the upper edge which has removed the domed top. The thimble has small circular indentations arranged in a regular spiral up the sides. The upper edge has broken along one of these rows of pits, presumably because they are a weaker point. The break is irregular but patinated. The thimble is now squashed in to an oval. It now measures 14.1mm in height. The base is now 25.4mm by 9.8mm and the top is 20.9mm by 9.4mm. The sides are 0.7mm thick and the thimble weighs 2.71g.
There is no evidence of folding in the rim which could suggest that it is cast rather than made from sheet metal. Egan (2005, p. 132) illustrates similar examples, numbers 624, 627, 636, which he dates between 1450-1600 AD.
