An incomplete copper alloy strap mount of the Post Medieval period, dating from AD 1600 - 1700.
The copper alloy strap fitting is circular and slightly domed and is hollow on the underside. The overall decorative design consists of three concentric-low-relief grooves with a central boss. The reverse face of the fitting is irregular and undecorated. Two cast sub-oval sectioned projections (hooks) extend from either end of the fitting.
The object is a dark brown in colour with an even patina. Abrasion caused by movment whilst within the plough soil may have resulted in the loss of some of the original surface detail. Other examples have also been recorded on the database including WAW-2A2216.
From WAW-2A2216: Strap fittings have been in use from the late Medieval to Post Medieval period. Egan (2005; p. 39) comments that when they were used as dress accessories and continued on horse harness straps into the 18th century.
