Gilt copper alloy Continental radiate-headed brooch, sub-triangular/semi-circular head with chip-carved eye motifs within border, three circular integral knobs project from outside edge each with a tiny stamped annulet. The shallow arched bow has a tiny knurled rib between flanking grooves. There are seven angular transverse ribs above the flat expanded sub-oval terminal which is decorated with a tiny central stamped annulet within a bordering line of multiple annulets. Pierced lug within corroded remains of iron pin and catch-plate on reverse. 20 x 39mm. Cf. a closely related early variant type of Frankish radiate-headed brooch from Krefeld, Germany, illustrated in MacGregor (1997) no.35.1, belonging to the 6th century.
