A copper alloy dress fastener, perhaps part of a cloak fastening, probably dating from the early post medieval period, AD1500-1650. It consists of a loop of copper alloy wire of circular section, one end of which extends to become the shaft and curved hook of the fastener. At the other end of the loop, the wire is extended into a shorter section: this is bound to the shaft with five turns of thinner gauge wire in order to prevent the loop from springing open. Traces of some sort of white metal coating remain on the fastener; elsewhere it displays a dark brown patina. It is 28mm long, 15mm wide and 7.9mm thick. It weighs 1.83gm.
