A cast copper-alloy Roman brooch of Colchester derivative Polden Hill (Mackreth Group 5, Western Group, flat wing ends), Mackreth 2011, 5.b1. Plate 50, dating from the first to second century AD. The brooch has the characteristic semi circular hollow wings with pierced plates at the ends for the axis bar, characteristic of these types of brooches. The front of the wings have simple incised bands of decoration. Above the wings, at the sides of the head, there are moulded crescents. At the top of the head there is a rearward projecting pierced lug which still contains the remains of the copper-alloy pin cord. The bow of the brooch is arched and tapers in width from the head to the foot. The tip of the foot of the brooch is missing and the catchplate, which was originally triangular with an openwork cut-out, is incomplete, with only the upper angle of the triangle still remaining. The brooch measures 46.25 mm long, 23.25 mm wide at the head, 13.06 mm thick at the head and weighs 7.1 grams. The brooch suffers from some abrasion and has a dark brown patina.
