A lead plumb bob of uncertain date. The weight is conical, with an iron suspension loop projecting from the top. There is some corrosion damage to the surface of the iron, and wear to the lead surface, but otherwise the object is in fair condition.
Still in use today, the plumb bob has a long history with its earliest recorded use by the Egyptians in around 2600BC (Murland). There are several examples on this database with numerous dates attributed, but no distinct typology has been developed to enable accurate dating of these tools. This example resembles LANCUM-8FA658, a roman copper alloy plumb bob, though LIN-706476 may be medieval or later.
