A slightly damaged fragment from a cast copper-alloy object: a strap fitting, possibly relating to a sword-belt hook or to suspending a purse. The object would have been broadly U-shaped with a hook at one end and a loop at the other; the loop survives. Within the loop the sub-rectangular slot was presumably for a leather strap (L.: 13.0mm, W.: 6.95mm). Below the slot is a circular perforation, recessed on one surface, whose function is unclear (Dia.: 3.3mm). The loop is slightly distorted as a result of old damage. The break has occurred just below the circular hole at a point at which the object has been twisted. For comparable published examples see Read (2008, 214-215; refs. 771-773); for a complete example with two perforations see ref. HAMP-EA1F45 on this database. The metal has mid-green patina over a red-brown metal of which only traces can be seen.
