Object type certainty: Certain

A slightly corroded and damaged, but complete medieval cast copper-alloy casket key. The key has a seemingly solid stem of oval cross-section with a hollow end; the end has been slightly abraded on one side. The bow is circular in shape with a circular perforation (Ext. dia.: 13.1mm, Int. dia.: 8.5mm). The bow has been bent slightly out of the plane of the stem and has cracked near the junction with the stem, lowermost. At the other end, the bit is rectangular in shape with a pair of rectangular clefts central on either short side creating four wards of broadly equal size. Similar keys can be found illustrated in Read (2001, 72; refs. 544ff.). This artefact has corroded to a variable mid-green colour.
