A cast lead alloy spindle whorl probably dating from the Medieval to early Post-Medieval periods (about 1200-1600). The whorl is plano convex with a thickened median rib. One face is decorated with lines and a scroll or floral design within; the other face is decorated with raised pellets and / or lines; there is no border around the perforation. The central perforation has a maximum diameter of 10mm which tapers to 9.7mm and a portion of the edge has been bent inward. The whorl has been damaged, with small gouges on the perforation edge. The whorl has a creamy grey-white patina with patches of creamy brown patina throughout. While decorated whorls of this form are commonly thought to be Medieval, spindle whorls and weights were cast throughout the Roman period to the Post-Medieval periods and are hard to date precisely.
