A nineteenth century lead Russian bale seal of St. Petersburg. The seal is a circular disc with a hole running between the two faces for the cord or string. Lettering is visible on both sides. The letters are very worn in places. Side A reads:
ПД = PD (Hemp)
П:ALM?ИMAH (P.ALM?IMAN)
H14
Side B reads:
SPB
HHRH
1805
The letters SPB stand for St. Petersburg. The letters PD indicate that this was for a bale of hemp inspected by P. Alm?iman. The seal indicates that the goods have been checked for quality and/or taxed. Such seals were attached to flax and hemp seed bags and finished linen.
