Tendring District, Essex: Post Medieval Bodkin
Date of Discovery: September 2011
Circumstances of discovery: Whilst searching with a metal detector
Date: Post Medieval 17th Century
Description:
A Silver fragment of dress pin of bodkin type, dating to the 17th century. The remaining length of pin has a rectangular section and has a perforated suspension hole (possibly for a pendant) and a scoop-shaped terminal, which is circular but now misshapen. At one end, there are the remains of the long rectangular perforation which would have ran down the length of bodkin. There is decoration covering the length of the object and both sides of the pin are decorated with a pattern. The geometric pattern, beginning at the collar after the scoop, consists of a line or two triangles pointing their apexes towards the centre, next to a hexagon shape with a central circle. The first circle has a perforation/suspension hole and the remaining two circles have small six petal flowers. In total, there are three lines and three circles in the space between the scoop terminal and the rectangular perforation.
Length: 42.8mm
Width: 7.13mm Thickness: 2.74mm Weight: 4.96grams
The object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal and is over 300 years old. Consequently it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996 in terms of both age and precious metal content.
