HARNESS PENDANT

Unique ID: BUC-F950E3

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

A complete medieval copper-alloy enamelled horse harness pendant, probably heraldic, dating to the 13th to 14th century. The pendant is in the shape of an elaborated quatrefoil, that is, with small triangular points at the angles of the curved sides. The upper curved side has an integrally cast suspension loop set at right angles to the pendant, and set centrally over the top. It is broadly circular and has been perforated centrally. The front of the pendant bears a low relief design within a slightly sunken field. The design is of a lion rampant, on a blue enamel background. This can be described heraldically as Azure a lion rampant. There is no clear surface treatment on the lion. The reverse of the pendant is plain and undecorated, though now corroded.

The pendant measures 38.84 by 31.11 mm and is 2.25 mm thick

This pendant is not readily paralleled.
