WEIGHT

Unique ID: YORYM-F52F85

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A complete cast lead weight of medieval date. It is conical in shape with a hexagonally faceted surface and flat base. The weight tapers towards the top which then opens into a circular, integrally cast, suspension with a central circular perforation.
The metal is a mid brownish-white colour and is worn. The weight is 50.7mm in height, 17.3mm in diameter at the base, and weighs 53.1g.
Similar weights are illustrated in Biggs, p.41 and are described as 'standing weights' that appeared in the 12th or 13th centuries with the integral suspension loop probably used for safe keeping. This form of weight is distinguished from steelyard weights due to the fact that it is designed to be freestanding.
