Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

Description: Post-medieval gold finger-ring or posy ring, now slightly distorted. D-sectioned hoop undecorated externally, inscribed internally Hearts united live contented. There is a stamped makers mark EH within a rectangle at the start of the inscription.

Date: 17th to 18th century.

Discussion: See British Museum collections 1961,1202.258 for a posy ring with identical maker's mark. This mark is not identifiable in any standard works of reference and the ring is dated 17th to 18th century . Compare inscription to rings in the British Museum collections bearing the same inscription; AF.1269, with a maker's mark of EB, dated to 1668 -1709 and AF.1270, with a maker's mark of MC, dated to 1768.

Notes:

In the absence of a datable makers mark this ring cannot be securely dated to pre 1711 and as such falls outside the remit of the Treasure Act 1996.

Class: posy
Inscription: EH Hearts united live contented.
