BUCKLE

Unique ID: SOM-BE4005

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Incomplete Post Medieval cast copper-alloy double-loop buckle frame and a possible second fragment of the same frame. The frame had two oval loops with concave backs, flat inner sides and bevelled fronts. About 90% of one loop and the strap bar and 10% of the second survives as the main piece. The other piece consists of the other end of the strap bar and the attached short sections of the frame. The breaks are old and worn and do not therefore fit exactly. The strap bar is narrowed with pointed knops at either end. The complete loop has a ogee shaped outer edge with a projecting central point emphasised by a raised open triangle within a recessed area on the front, creating a pin rest. This point is flanked by slightly concave sections emphasised by incised transverse lines across the frame at the end of the concave section, one of the transverse lines is single, the other double. The larger piece is 38.5mm long, 50.9mm wide and 4.5mm thick; it weighs 10.86 g. The smaller piece is 16.5mm long, 12.5mm wide and 3.8mm thick, it weighs 1.59g.
Whitehead (2003) illustrates a similar buckle but with less pronounced moulding and no incised lines (page 61, No.362) which he dates to c.1550-1650 AD.
