Object type certainty: Probably

Description: Fragment of a medieval silver badge, in the shape of a Lombardic letter 'E', with integrally cast circular lug on the reverse. The badge is probably either a pilgrim souvenir representing the name of a saint, or alternatively represents the initial of the name of the owner. The lower part of the letter beneath the horizontal bar is largely missing, and there is a break in the top curve of the badge.

See B.Spencer, Pilgrim Souvenirs and Secular Badges, Salisbury and South Wiltshire Museum Medieval Catalogue, Part 2 (1990), 51, cat 108, fig 144, for a similar crowned Lombardic E badge, possibly representing St Edward the Confessor, and discussion of other letter badges.
