CANDLE SNUFFER

Unique ID: LIN-F6A115

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

A post-medieval copper-alloy fragment from a candle snuffer. The object is flat, rectangular and has a trefoil terminal at either end, one of which is broken. The main body is divided vertically down the centre by a groove, and twice again horizontally. The central panels each contain three ring and dot motifs in a row. The trefoil terminal contains three ring and dot motifs. Two rivets holes are situated on the body, one in each upper angle. On the reverse a long strip of corrosion is noted where they may have been a joining strip or method of attachment. This would have formed one side of the box into which the 'snuff' (trimmed wick) would have dropped during trimming with a scissors-type candle snuffer.

See WAW-35DFC3, SWYOR-6E9078, SOM-409575 and PUBLIC-8BF257 for other examples.
