TREASURE CASE 2011 T803:
A medieval brooch, much distorted. The frame, originally circular in shape, is decorated with two nude (?) figures astride lions, possibly in combat.
The figures are separated by the pin of the brooch, which has an ornamental collar of punched decoration below the attachment loop. Brooches with figural decoration, often showing figures in combat, were fashionable in the thirteenth century. See for example, J. Alexander and P. Binski, The Age of Chivalry: Art in Plantagenet England1200-1400, Royal Academy 1987, p. 483, cat.no. 641.
The brooch is silver-gilt and dates from the mid thirteenth century.
Dimensions: height 23 mm, width 19 mm.
