Lower part of the bow and foot of a Roman bow brooch. The bow is D-shaped in section with a raised rib running down the front ending in a transverse raised line at the foot. It is 3.4mm wide at the old break at the top and 3.2mm wide bust above the terminal. The terminal at the foot has rounded lobes flanking the plain foot and separated from it by the narrow collars between the lobes. At the back is a catchplate with a curved upper edge and a straight lower edge level with the foot. The outer edge is irregular where it would have been bent over forming a catch for the pin. It is 30.6mm long, 19.1mm wide and 8.4mm wide; and weighs 2.73mm.
Without the head, which defines early bow brooch types, it is hard to definitively assign this to a type. The bi-lobed foot is very unusual but the long, thin, relatively straight lower bow suggests it dates from the mid first to mid-second century, 50-150 AD.
