A silver halfpenny Of Henry VIII, second coinage, mint of York. The obverse has a facing bust with the initials 'T' and 'W' either side of the head, representing Archbishop Thomas Wolsey. Wolsey was made Archbishop of York in 1514 and died in 1530; North's classification (number 1818) dates this coin from 1526, and as Wolsey died in discrace facing charges of treason, it is unlikely to have been struck after 1530. The obverse legend reads [H D G ROSA SIE SPIA]. The reverse has a long cross with three pellets in each angle and the legend [CIVI]TAS E[BORACI]. Coins of higher denomination bearing Wolsey's mark can been seen on this database, for example LEIC-D64D26.
