A copper alloy Medieval stud. It is shield-shaped, with a flat top, and rounded corners at the base and a slight knop at the centre. There are traces of armorial decoration, (a bend cotised between six lions rampant) with a band from top left to bottom right, and a suggestion of the three lions to either side. This device is part of the armory of the de Bohun, Earls of Hereford and Essex. The metalwork is worn and corroded which obscures the detail. On the reverse is a single integral rivet 4mm in thickness, which has been flattened against the stud. The object measures 31.62mm in length, 25.55mm in width, 2.5mm in thickness and weighs 10.76g.
Examples of the device are shown on pendants in Ashley 2002, fig.12 nos 80-81.
