A mostly complete, Post Medieval, struck or hammered, silver, shilling of Charles I (1625-49). Obverse: Crowned bust left with XII behind, Group F, sixth bust (Briot style) - widespread double arch crown, collar with large stellate lace border. Inscription: (CAR)OLUS.DG.MA(G BRI).FRA(ET)HIB.REX Reverse: Square shield with cross ends larger and plain moline. Inscription: CHRISTO (A)USPIC(E REG)NO. Minted in Tower - London (under Parliament). Mint Mark: P in brackets (P) (98). Die axis 6 o'clock. The coin has been clipped, worn but legible - fine condition but rather tarnished grey/black surface. The coin is likely to date to 1643-1644. Ref. Coins of England and the UK, Spink 2011, page 281 no. 2800 and English Hammered Coinage, Vol. 2, J.J. North, Spink 1991 reprint 2006, page 160 no. 2231. This coin measures 30.35mm long, 28.61mm wide, 1.13mm thick, diameter 30.35mm and weighs 5.6g.
