A cast copper alloy Post-medieval 'snake' buckle. The buckle is 'S' shaped in plan (hence it's name) the terminals of which are formed as stylised heads of beasts, possibly a serpent-like creature, with raised ears and a pronounced projecting beak, with details for the eyes and mouth. The buckle is worn but most details can be discerned. In the centre of the buckle frame is a four-knopped moulded collar. There is a possible floral design (trefoils) either side of the collar on the front and back of the collar. Popular throughout the post-medieval period, and probably forming part of a sword belt, this 'snake' buckle is a later example dating to c.18th century AD.
