Treasure Case 2011 T758 Post medieval dress fitting
Period: Post-Medieval
Description: post-medieval silver-gilt fitting, two sheets of silver cut to the shape of the fleur-de-lis motif. The upper sheet cast with the relief of the fleur-de-lis. The upper part of this sheet is now missing, only the lower plumes remain and are gilded. The fitting has been bent. The reverse is gilded and appears to be broken at the base.
Dimensions: Length: 18.70mm Width: 12.34mm Thickness: 0.41mm Weight: 0.8g
Discussion: The function of this item is unknown but it probably had an attachment loop and so may have been part of a dress fitting. A similar example in design can be found from Potter Bar, Hertfordshire (2009 T695, PAS no: BH-1516F7) and from Tendring, Essex (2009 T520, PAS no: ESS-CB7200)
Consequently, in terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
