BROOCH

Unique ID: NMS-A4D7A5

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

Silver gros tournois of Louis IX, Tours, 1266-70. The coin has been centrally pierced and the obverse gilded, presumably so that it could have been mounted. The most likely form of treatment would have been riveting the coin to a bar with brooch fittings. These coin brooches were at the height of their popularity in the late 13th century and due to the lack of English coins of a suitable size (apart from Edward I's very rare and short-lived groats) foreign coins were usually the ones so adapted.

Class: Coin
Evidence of reuse: Gilded on one face and the edges and pierced centrally for attachment.
