An incomplete post-Medieval cast copper-alloy saddle pommel (c. 1500-c. 1650 AD).
The object is U-shaped in plan and semi-circular in cross-section. It is decorated with grooves throughout its length on the outer face. There are two circular holes at one side which have a diameter of 3.6mm. The perforated wing is largely missing.
This pommel is corroded and has traces of a mid-brown patina on the outer face. The break is old.
61.4 x 31.4 x 19.8mm.Weight: 27.15g.
Numerous saddle pommels are recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database. A close parallel is one from Framfield Parish, East Sussex (SUSS-FD1670).
A Two-piece pommel has been published and dated 16th-17th century (Read 1995: 127, ref: 808).
The pommel would have been riveted onto a wooden protrusion on the front of the frame of the saddle, to which the reins could then be secured. Saddles were wooden framed and leather clad at this time in order to support a man in full armour.
