An incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman Colchester derivative Polden Hill bow brooch with folded wings. It is missing the pin, foot and catchplate due to old breaks. The wings are semi-cylindrical in form, folded at their ends to give them a cylindrical form that encases and holds in place the separately cast axis bar. On the front face of the wings is incised decoration comprising single vertical grooves at the outer edges and a single diagonal groove running from outer edge towards the centre of the brooch. The spring has three surviving coils and the remains of the pin, all held in place by a projecting, integrally cast rear-facing hook. Beneath the rear hook extends the bow, which is oval shaped in form and terminates in old breaks above the foot. It is decorated on the front face with three vertical grooves. The entire object has a dark brown patina with some pitting and corrosion. It measures 27.45mm in length, 21.74mm in width at wings, 7.67mm in width a bow, 3.82mm in thickness at bow, and 8.16g in weight.
This is an incomplete Roman Colchester derivative Polden Hill bow brooch with a near identical parallel published from Hacheston (Blagg et al., 2002: no. 80). It is of 1st century AD date, c.43-70 AD.
