A complete cast copper alloy Medieval buckle with attached plate dating from about 1350-1400. The frame is trapezoidal, widening towards the expanded outer side; an incised pin rest may have been located at the centre but is no longer visible. The horizontal sides of the frame are slightly bowed and of rectangular section; the axis bar is of circular section. The plate (the back portion having been broken off just below the axis bar) would have been folded around the axis bar and comprise two roughly equal-sized sub rectangular sides. At the frame end there is a slot surrounding the pin. A now missing rivet would have held the two sides of the plate to together and secured the strap. The holes for this rivet would have been located near the opposite end of the plate but these portions are now missing. The remaining plate has is stuck an an upward angle and the pin remains flush with the plate. The buckle and plate have a light-medium green patina. Please see Egan and Pritchard's Dress Accessories, page 96, figure 61 for more examples of this type. A similar buckle may also be found on the database at PAS record ID: BH-0E4335.
