BUCKLE

Unique ID: IOW-73D2B6

Object type certainty: Certain

An incomplete cast copper alloy double-looped buckle of post-Medieval date (c. 1550-c. 1650 AD).
The pin is missing.
The frame is convex at the front and flat at the rear and has two identical oval loops. The bar is slightly narrowed, sub-triangular in cross-section (flat at the rear) and extends beyond the frame at each side to form small knops. Mid-way along the length of the bar, on the rear face, there is a deposit of iron corrosion. This corrosion indicates that the missing pin was probably made of iron. At each outside edge of the frame there is a moulded rosette motif. There is no evidence on the outside edges for a pin rest. The frame has active corrosion and traces of a black substance.
45.8 x 24.3 x 3.9mm. Weight: 5.87g.
A similar buckle frame has been published by Ross Whitehead, (Whitehead 1996: 66, ref: 410). This published buckle frame is dated c. 1550 - c. 1650 AD.
